Circuit quantum electrodynamics (QED) is the study of the interaction of nonlinear superconducting circuits, acting as artificial atoms for quantum information processing, with quantized electromagnetic fields in the microwave-frequency domain. In recent decades, the emergence of quantum information science has intensified research toward using these circuits as qubits in quantum information processors. In this presentation I will describe how it now plays an essential role in current approaches to gate-based quantum computing with superconducting circuits.
